Hey! My Name is Kayla Bonina and welcome to my page! I cannot thank you enough for your support! I wanted to give you all a little personal background and a peek into my fitness journey.
I was born in Boca Raton, Florida, but moved with my Mom to Dallas, Texas at a young age. Much like my mother, sports were a passion of mine. Volleyball, tennis, dance, softball, basketball; you name it, I played it. But, sliding into home plate during a high school softball game shifted my perfect plans for college. With a broken ankle, my softball scholarship disappeared, and with it came the fear of never being able to call myself an athlete. I felt so lost, and that lost feeling gradually transitioned into depression. Sports were my life and I couldn't imagine not being an athlete.
After hard work and months of rehab, I attended LeTourneau University in Longview, TX to play college volleyball and later tennis. Though my ankle had healed, my internal wound was much deeper than I realized. Collegiate sports had not proved to be the salve I had hoped for and I still could not shake that "lost" feeling. I banked on my positive attitude to mask the real pain, and 85 pounds later, I no longer recognized myself.
After finishing my sophomore year, I was determined to spend the summer getting in better shape. Not really sure where to start, I decided to try out a Zumba class at my hometown community center. From the second the music started, I was captivated. After that first class, I was exhausted and drenched in sweat, but my soul has never been more at peace. I instantly signed up for as many more classes as I could. Those summer Zumba classes truly set my life in a new direction. I soaked up all I could from the instructors and enjoyed the process of rediscovering all my body was capable of doing and learning.
After graduation, I joined the real world and got an 8 to 5 while teaching Zumba classes at a local gym a few nights a week. The corporate world was not for me and I needed out! Nothing seemed to match the joy I had while teaching a Zumba class, so I decided I wanted to pursue fitness full time. Knowing how rigorous it was to become a personal trainer, I spent my nights and weekends studying. All my efforts paid off as I earned my AFAA personal trainer certification. With the support of my loving family, I took the leap of faith, quit my job and pursed a full-time career in fitness.
Three years and 15 certifications later, I can honestly say I love what I do now more than ever. I whole-heartedly believe in making life style changes, because there are no short cuts to health. I know what it's like to not recognize yourself in the mirror and feel completely helpless to change who you see. I also know, that you CAN do it; I believe in you even if you don't yet. Fitness is my passion and I want nothing more than to help you reach your goals.
